# Media Asset Management

> Upload, preview, organize, and delete images, videos, and binary attachments using the StrataNote Media Manager for your knowledge base.

StrataNote features a central Media Manager that helps you upload, preview, and clean up media assets associated with your documents.

## Media Explorer

Open the Media Manager by clicking the **Media (Folder/Image)** icon in the main sidebar.

### Asset Categories

To make navigation easy, files are automatically sorted into categories with interactive counters:

* **All:** Displays every attachment in the database.
* **Images:** Filters strictly by image formats (PNG, JPG, JPEG, GIF, SVG, WebP).
* **Videos:** Filters strictly by video formats (MP4, WebM, OGG).
* **Others:** Filters other binary files (PDFs, ZIPs, text documents).

**Interface Preview:** A grid layout showing image thumbnails and video preview blocks. Above the grid are filter buttons with count badges (e.g., `Images (45)`, `Videos (12)`).

## Chunked Uploads for Large Files

Uploading large video files or attachments can exceed default server payload limits. StrataNote handles this by splitting large files (over 5MB) into chunks:

* **Chunking:** Files are sliced in the browser and uploaded sequentially block by block.
* **Progress Tracking:** An interactive progress bar displays the status of the upload (e.g., `Uploading: 45%`).
* **Reliability:** If a chunk fails, the system automatically retries, ensuring stable uploads for files up to **300MB+**.

## Filename Collision Protection

To prevent accidentally overwriting files with identical names (e.g., uploading two different files named `screenshot.png`):

1. **Detection:** The system checks if the filename already exists in your vault.
2. **Action Prompts:** A dialog box appears offering three options:
   * **Overwrite:** Replace the existing file with the new one.
   * **Rename:** Automatically append a suffix (e.g., `screenshot_1.png`) to keep both files safe and preserve existing Markdown links.
   * **Cancel:** Abort the upload.

**Interface Preview:** A confirmation modal warning about duplicate filenames, displaying thumbnail previews of both the existing and incoming files.

## Video Preview & Thumbnail Optimization

To keep the application fast when loading hundreds of media files, StrataNote applies custom optimizations:

* **Image Resizing:** The server automatically generates optimized 800px thumbnails on-the-fly, reducing network load.
* **Video Frame Capture:** Instead of loading full videos, the browser captures the first frame using an HTML5 Canvas and displays it as a static thumbnail.
* **Lazy Playback:** Full video playback only starts when you hover your cursor over the card, saving bandwidth and system memory.

## Cleaning Orphaned Files

Over time, you might delete note references to images or videos, leaving unused files in your storage.

* **Orphan Filter:** Toggle the "Show Orphaned Files" checkbox in the media manager to list files that are not referenced in any Markdown note.
* **Bulk Deletion:** Select unused files and click **"Delete Selected"** to free up disk space safely.
